If you run vans, cars or light commercial vehicles in the UK, an OBD GPS tracker is often the fastest way to get a fleet online. It plugs straight into the vehicle's diagnostic port, draws power from it, and starts reporting location within minutes — no auto-electrician, no downtime, no wiring loom. But plug-and-play convenience comes with trade-offs, and choosing the wrong OBD GPS tracker can leave you with a fleet of devices that stop reporting the moment the 2G network is switched off. This guide explains how OBD tracking works, which devices are 4G-ready, where a plug-in unit beats a hardwired one, and where it does not.
What an OBD GPS Tracker Actually Does
Every car and van sold in the UK since 2001 (petrol) or 2004 (diesel) carries a standardised OBD-II diagnostic socket, usually tucked under the dashboard near the driver's knees. It was designed for garages to read engine fault codes, but it also provides a permanent 12V supply and a data channel into the vehicle's electronics. An OBD GPS tracker exploits both. It sits in that socket, powers itself from the vehicle, locates itself via GNSS, and transmits position, ignition status, trip history and driving-behaviour events over the mobile network to your telematics platform.
Because the device is self-contained, installation genuinely is a 30-second job that a driver can do themselves. For a small business tracking six vans, or a leasing company that fits and removes trackers repeatedly as vehicles change hands, that matters far more than it might sound. The 2G Trap: Choose a 4G OBD GPS Tracker
This is the single most important point in this article. A large proportion of the OBD trackers still sold in the UK are 2G-only devices. UK operators have already begun retiring 2G and 3G capacity, and while 2G is expected to persist for some time in support of legacy machine-to-machine estates, it is a shrinking and deprioritised resource. If you are buying an OBD GPS tracker today for a five-year deployment, assume 2G becomes unreliable well before the end of that period.
Fortunately you do not have to compromise on the form factor to get modern connectivity. The Teltonika FMC003 gives you LTE Cat 1, the Teltonika FMM003 is the LTE Cat M1 equivalent for low-bandwidth, low-power deployments, and the Teltonika FMC800 is a more advanced 4G OBD unit for fleets that need extra functionality from a plug-in device. Older 2G OBD units such as the Teltonika FMB010 and Teltonika FMB020 still have a place in short-term hire fleets, insurance trials and export markets where 2G coverage remains solid — but they are not what we would put on a five-year UK contract.

The honest comparison is this: an OBD GPS tracker wins on speed and reversibility, and a hardwired tracker wins on almost everything else. Hardwired devices are hidden behind trim, so they cannot be unplugged by a driver who would rather not be tracked, and they cannot be dislodged by a knee. They also give you inputs and outputs that a bare OBD dongle has nowhere to terminate — a panic button, a private/business mode switch, a starter immobiliser relay, a wired driver ID reader.
Where you need full fleet functionality, a hardwired device such as the Teltonika FMC130 gives you 4G LTE Cat 1 connectivity, a backup battery, configurable I/O and CAN adapter support — at the cost of a professional fit. Many fleets end up running a mixed estate: OBD units on short-lease cars, hardwired units on the vans they own outright.
OBD, CAN Bus and Getting Beyond Basic Location
The other limitation of a plug-in OBD GPS tracker is data depth. Reading generic OBD-II parameters will typically give you engine RPM, coolant temperature, road speed, fault codes and — on many vehicles — fuel level and odometer. That is useful. What it will not reliably give you is the manufacturer-specific data fleet managers actually want: accurate fuel consumed, AdBlue level, seatbelt status, door open events, PTO engagement or driver-specific diagnostics. Those live on the vehicle's CAN bus in proprietary formats, and reading them properly requires a CAN-capable tracker paired with a contactless CAN adapter such as the Teltonika LV-CAN200 for light vehicles or the Teltonika ALL-CAN300 for mixed light and heavy fleets.
If deeper vehicle data is the goal, a hardwired CAN-capable tracker will serve you far better than any plug-in dongle. Adding Driver Identification to an OBD Deployment
One practical consequence of choosing an OBD GPS tracker is that driver identification becomes harder. In a shared-vehicle fleet — pool cars, multi-shift vans, agency drivers — knowing who was behind the wheel is the difference between a speeding fine you can allocate and one you cannot. A hardwired tracker can be paired with a wired PIN keypad, iButton or RFID reader; a plug-in OBD dongle usually cannot, because there is nowhere to terminate the reader's wiring.
The workaround is Bluetooth. Several modern Teltonika and Queclink trackers support BLE key fobs and BLE driver ID readers, which pair wirelessly and remove the need for a wiring run. Buying an OBD GPS Tracker in the UK
Whatever form factor you land on, buy from a distributor that holds UK stock and will tell you honestly which network technology a device uses and which regional variant you need. Grey-market OBD trackers bought from overseas marketplaces frequently turn out to be 2G-only, banded for the wrong region, locked to a foreign platform, or supplied without the firmware and configuration support you will need when something misbehaves at six o'clock on a Monday morning.
