CAN Bus GPS Trackers: Unlock Deep Vehicle Data for UK Fleet Management

Updated: Jul 3

Standard GPS trackers tell you where a vehicle is and how fast it is going. CAN bus GPS trackers go further — they read directly from the vehicle's own data network, unlocking fuel consumption, odometer readings, engine fault codes, RPM, axle weight, and dozens of other parameters that would otherwise require a separate diagnostic module. If you want to understand what your vehicles are doing rather than just where they are, CAN bus is the technology to look at.

What Is the CAN Bus?

The Controller Area Network (CAN bus) is the communication backbone built into virtually every modern vehicle. It allows the vehicle's many electronic control units — engine, transmission, ABS, fuel system, dashboard instruments — to share data with each other. A CAN bus GPS tracker connects to this network, usually via the OBD-II port or a direct wiring harness, reads the data stream in real time, and forwards selected parameters to your telematics platform alongside the standard GPS position data.

What Data Does CAN Bus Provide?

Depending on the vehicle manufacturer and model, CAN bus data can include fuel consumption (real figures from the ECU, not GPS estimates), total distance from the odometer, engine RPM and load, coolant temperature, battery voltage, vehicle speed as reported by the vehicle, active and pending fault codes (DTCs), seat belt status, and — in commercial vehicles — axle weight and tachograph data. The range of available parameters varies by make and model.

Which Teltonika Devices Support CAN Bus?

Teltonika produces several GPS trackers with CAN bus support for different vehicle types. The FMC130 and FMC150 are popular for light commercial vehicles and vans. The FMC640 and FMB641 suit heavier commercial applications. Teltonika also produces the ALL-CAN300 and LV-CAN200 adapters, which extend CAN bus compatibility to a wide range of vehicle makes and models without requiring custom wiring. Tracking Hardware stocks the full Teltonika CAN bus range.

CAN Bus and Queclink Devices

Queclink also offers CAN bus-capable devices. The CV200 is well suited to light commercial and passenger vehicle fleets, providing OBD-II CAN bus data alongside standard GPS tracking. For heavier commercial vehicles, the CV5000 supports J1939 — the commercial vehicle CAN bus standard — for truck and bus fleet applications. Both are available from Tracking Hardware.

Benefits for UK Fleet Management

CAN bus tracking pays for itself quickly. Accurate fuel consumption from the vehicle ECU drives meaningful driver fuel efficiency comparisons. Fault code monitoring gives advance warning of maintenance issues, reducing unexpected breakdowns and emergency repair costs. Odometer data automates service scheduling. Combined with driver identification keypads, every data point — every litre of fuel, every fault code triggered — is attributed to the driver behind the wheel at that moment.
