FAQ

What Is a Driver Identification Keypad?

A driver identification keypad is a compact device installed inside a fleet vehicle. Before a driver can start the vehicle, they must enter their unique personal PIN code. This simple step creates an automatic link between the driver and the vehicle in your GPS tracking platform, giving you complete visibility over who is driving what, when, and where.

Who Needs a Driver ID Keypad?

Driver ID keypads are ideal for any organisation that operates shared vehicles — where multiple drivers use the same vehicle at different times. Common sectors include local councils and utilities fleets, logistics and delivery companies, construction and plant hire operators, NHS and healthcare transport fleets, and security and facilities management companies.

Why Choose a Keypad Over RFID or iButton?

Unlike RFID cards or iButton fobs, a PIN keypad requires no physical token that can be lost, forgotten, or shared between drivers. Each driver carries only their PIN in their memory, making it the most secure and practical method of driver identification for high-turnover or remote teams.

Which GPS trackers are compatible with your driver ID keypads?

Our driver identification keypads are fully compatible with a wide range of leading GPS tracker brands, including Teltonika (FMB, FMC, FMM and FTC series), Queclink (GV and GL series), Ruptela, and Digital Matter. Compatibility depends on the connection method — our wired keypads use the 1-Wire protocol, while our BLE keypad connects wirelessly via Bluetooth Low Energy. If you are unsure whether a specific tracker model is compatible, contact us and we will advise you before you order.

What is the difference between IP65 and IP68 rated keypads?

IP ratings indicate how well a device is protected against dust and water. IP65 means the keypad is fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction — suitable for most vehicle cab environments and light outdoor exposure. IP68 offers a higher level of protection, meaning the device is fully dust-tight and can withstand continuous immersion in water — making it the preferred choice for trucks, buses, construction vehicles, and any application where the keypad is mounted externally or exposed to heavy rain, pressure washing, or extreme weather conditions. If your vehicles operate outdoors or in harsh environments, we recommend choosing an IP68 rated keypad.

Can a driver ID keypad be used to immobilise the vehicle?

Yes — when integrated with a compatible GPS tracker that supports immobilisation, the driver ID keypad can be configured to prevent the vehicle from starting unless a valid PIN code is entered. This means that if a driver attempts to start the vehicle without identifying themselves, the ignition remains disabled. This is particularly valuable for fleets looking to prevent unauthorised use, reduce vehicle theft, and ensure that only authorised, identified drivers can operate company vehicles. Please contact us to confirm immobilisation compatibility with your specific tracker model.
