Teltonika FTC vs FMC Trackers: What's the Difference for UK Fleets?

If you've been comparing Teltonika trackers for your fleet, you've probably noticed two similarly-numbered families sitting side by side: the established FMC series and the newer FTC series. Model names like FMC920 and FTC921 look almost interchangeable, and it's easy to assume the "C" and the three digits are all that matter. They're not. FTC and FMC represent two different hardware and software generations from Teltonika, built around different configuration tools, connectivity options and target use cases. Two Configuration Tools, One Transition

Teltonika built its FMC (and FMB) range around the Teltonika Configurator, the desktop tool installers have used for years to set parameters, I/O and reporting rules over a USB or serial connection. It's comprehensive but, as Teltonika itself acknowledges, can feel overloaded once you go past the basics. FTC-prefixed devices are built for Teltonika's newer Telematics Configuration Tool (TCT), introduced specifically to replace the legacy Configurator. Teltonika has confirmed TCT works only with FTC-prefixed hardware — FMC and FMB devices stay on the older Configurator, which Teltonika says it will keep maintaining during the transition. In short: if your fleet already runs Teltonika Configurator, every FMC device fits into that existing workflow; FTC devices are the ones built for the newer tool.

Hardware Differences: What a Side-by-Side Test Found

Independent testing comparing the FMC920 and FTC921 back-to-back found real hardware differences beyond the configuration software. The FTC921 uses a Nano-SIM and USB-C port, versus the FMC920's standard components, and supports a far wider operating voltage range — 10–90V, compared with the FMC920's 10–30V. That matters if you're tracking electric vehicles, e-scooters or other light electric vehicles running outside typical 12V/24V automotive ranges. On positioning, the FTC921 tracked up to 40 satellites across GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou, with roughly 1.8m accuracy and a noticeably faster cold start in testing. It also adds jamming detection, more precise crash detection and excessive idling alerts, where the FMC920 relies on basic accelerometer-based crash detection. None of this makes the FMC920 a worse tracker — it's a proven, established unit — but the FTC921 is the newer hardware platform with a broader feature set. Where FTC and FMC Sit in Teltonika's Range

The FTC vs FMC split isn't a strict "basic vs advanced" divide. Teltonika groups FTC134 and FTC164 alongside the LTE Cat M1 FTM series under its Fleet Telematics Trackers category, sitting within the wider Advanced Trackers range next to FMC130, FMC230 and other FMC-prefixed models. At the plug-and-play end, quick-install models like the FTC880 and FTC887 sit in Teltonika's Fast & Easy range together with the FMC880 and FMC800 — both prefixes appear there, aimed at installs anyone can do in under five minutes with no wiring or special tools. Driver Identification: BLE Keypad Compatibility

Both lines support Bluetooth, and that includes driver ID. If your fleet is already running FMC or FMB devices on the Teltonika Configurator, staying with FMC keeps every unit on one familiar configuration workflow — there's no need to switch generations just for the sake of it. If you're deploying new hardware, want Bluetooth setup without physical access to each unit, or need the wider voltage range for EVs and light electric vehicles, the FTC line is the newer, more future-proof option.
