The FMC920 is the tracker most UK fleets already know: a compact, hardwired 4G LTE Cat 1 device that has been the default entry-level choice for years. The FTC920 is Teltonika's newer take on the same job, built on the company's FT platform with a substantially better GNSS receiver. They look similar, they cost similar money, and they sit side by side in our catalogue — but they are not interchangeable. One difference in particular decides which one belongs in your vehicles.
The Core Difference: FM Platform vs FT Platform
The FMC920 runs Teltonika's long-established FM firmware platform, configured with the familiar Teltonika Configurator. The FTC920 runs the newer FT platform, configured with Teltonika's Telematics Configuration Tool. This is not a cosmetic change. Parameter IDs, configuration files and firmware images do not carry across between the two platforms, so an installer's saved FMC920 configuration cannot simply be loaded onto an FTC920. If your team has built up a library of tested configurations, that retraining cost is real and worth budgeting for.
GNSS Accuracy: The FTC920's Real Advantage
This is where the FTC920 earns its place. Teltonika's datasheet quotes 135 tracking and acquisition channels and position accuracy of under 1.8 m CEP, against the FMC920's 33-channel receiver and accuracy of under 3 m. Velocity accuracy is specified at under 0.1 m/s. In practice that means tighter position reporting in urban canyons, faster reacquisition after a tunnel or multi-storey car park, and cleaner journey traces where vehicles run close together. For stolen vehicle recovery, urban last-mile delivery and any application where a few metres decides whether a stop is logged at the right address, the FTC920 is the stronger receiver.
Bluetooth and Driver ID: The FMC920's Real Advantage
The FMC920 carries Bluetooth 4.0 + LE, with support for Teltonika EYE beacons and sensors, OBDII dongles and universal BLE sensors. Teltonika's current published FTC920 datasheet and quick manual list no Bluetooth interface at all, and neither device lists 1-Wire.
For fleets running driver identification keypads, that is the deciding factor. On the 920 form factor, driver ID is achieved over BLE — which means the FMC920 supports it and, on current documentation, the FTC920 does not. If driver identification is part of your specification and you want to stay in this size and price class, specify the FMC920. If you need PIN, RFID or iButton driver ID with a wired interface, step up to a tracker with 1-Wire and RS232 such as the FMC130 or FMC230.
Shared Technical Specifications
Both devices are 4G LTE Cat 1 with 2G GSM fallback, both take 10–30 V DC input covering 12 V and 24 V vehicle systems, both carry a 170 mAh Li-Ion backup battery and 128 MB of internal memory for buffering during signal outages, and both provide one digital input, one digital output and one analogue input with internal GNSS and cellular antennas.
The physical differences are modest but worth knowing before installation: the FMC920 measures 79 x 43 x 12 mm at 54 g with an IP54 rating, a Micro-SIM slot and a Micro-USB port; the FTC920 measures 93 x 43 x 12.5 mm at 65 g, uses a Nano-SIM and a USB Type-C port, and quotes an operating range of -40 °C to +85 °C. The FTC920 also adds network jamming detection, excessive idling and auto geofence to its scenario list.
Which Should You Choose for New Deployments?
Choose the FTC920 where positioning quality is the priority and no BLE accessories are involved — anti-theft and stolen vehicle recovery, dense urban operation, and eco-driving programmes that depend on accurate speed and distance data. Choose the FMC920 where the vehicle needs driver ID keypads, EYE sensors, BLE temperature probes or an OBDII dongle, or where you are adding units to an existing FMC920 fleet and want to keep one configuration file and one training process across the whole estate.
Platform and Protocol Compatibility
Both devices report over Teltonika's Codec 8 and Codec 8 Extended protocols, so any UK telematics platform that already accepts Teltonika data will accept both. Can I swap an FMC920 for an FTC920 without rewiring the vehicle?
The wiring is comparable — 10–30 V DC input, one digital input, one digital output and one analogue input — but the FTC920 is 14 mm longer and slightly thicker, so check your mounting location. You will also need to rebuild the configuration in the Telematics Configuration Tool rather than reusing your FMC920 file, and the SIM changes from Micro to Nano.
